BUDOKAN KARATE & KOBUJUTSU

The Budokan Karate & Kobujutsu Club is new in name but rich in its heritage. Budokan, formed in October 2000, is headed by brothers Nigel & Trevor Williams. Both of the Sensei hold the rank of 6th Dan (Rokudan) and began their formal training in Shotokan Karate in the early 1970’s in Ireland. They have had the privilege of training under some of the most senior and distinguished Karateka in the Europe and Japan. They include Sensei Nakayama, Kase, Enoeda, Shirai, Kanazawa, Kawazoe, Naito, Osaka, Ochi, Ohta, Andy Sherry, Terry O’Neill, Dirk Heene and Dave Hooper to name just a few.

Nigel & Trevor Williams have been teaching Shotokan Karate since 1977 in Ireland, where they still have clubs under their tutelage. Nigel returned to Bermuda in 1989 and began training with the J.K.A. of Bermuda. Later he became a partner in the club.

Around 1999 with the return of his brother, Trevor, they formed the Budokan Karate & Kobujutsu Club. This realized a dream that they had of returning home and opening a club to impart their knowledge and experience garnished from many years of international experience in Europe as Competitors, Coaches and also as Referees.

The club focuses on Shotokan Karate, which encompasses both traditional, and competition Karate as well as Okinawan weapons e.g. Bo (staff), Sai & Tonfa etc.

The club is one of the most successful clubs on the local tournament scene and its members include high-class competitors and national team members.

The dynamic Karate style that they teach is indicative of their background which is rooted in the strong, traditional Karate of the Japan Karate Association as well as the dynamic teaching espoused by Kase – Ha Shotokan.

Trevor is currently the President of the Bermuda Martial Arts Federation, the official governing body for the martial arts in Bermuda. Both Trevor and Nigel are the coaches of the Bermuda National Team which competes in the World Championships held under the auspices of the World Karate Federation (W.K.F.). The most recent events were the 2002 WKF World Championships in Madrid, Spain, and the 2004 WKF world Championships in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon Mexico.

The club is affiliated to the International Karate Kyokai & the Bermuda Martial Arts Federation and also has strong links with the Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shinko Kai & the Tai Chi Association of Ireland to name a few.

The main club operates out of the Bermuda High School for Girls and offers classes for both adult and children. Through their highly successful BudoKids program, they have over 50 children studying the ideals and principles of traditional Shotokan Karate.
